Mining Engineering was established in 1880 as one of the first institutes at RWTH Aachen University. The research area „Mining Engineering“ deals with engineering and economic issues along the entire value chain of mining operations.
In 2015, the Institute of Mining Engineering I (BBK I) and the Institute of Mining Engineering III (BBK III) merged to become the new Institute of Mineral Resources Engineering (MRE).
