1. Introduction:- Barli Development Institute for Rural Women (BDIRW) (founded in the year 1985) is a registered non-governmental, non-profit, developmental organization which aims to empower young rural and tribal women to become agents of social change through the acquisition of a wide range of skills and knowledge needed to improve the lives of their families, their communities and themselves. Based in Indore, BDIRW has successfully completed 116 residential training programs for more than 8800 women from nearly 880 villages of Madhya Pradesh and other parts of India. It gives priority to socially & economically disadvantaged women, i.e., scheduled caste, tribes and backward classes; some are physically challenged, orphans, widows, or divorcees who are often neglected by their society. It was registered as an independent NGO in 2001 and is currently managed and guided by its own Board of Directors. 2. Vision: ‘Our vision is a world in which every rural and tribal woman attains the right to survival, protection, development and participation’. 3. Mission: ‘To train and empower young rural and tribal women through building their capacity, skills and knowledge, to make them skilled human resources and social change agents, so that they would initiate the process of sustainable development by improving the lives of their families, communities and themselves’. 4. Training programs: Twice a year, a batch of about 130 women (i.e. 260 trainees per year) arrive to undergo the free residential 6-months training course, consisting of: Literacy, Health, Stitching & tailoring, Community development, Organic farming, Medicinal plant cultivation, Solar cooking & drying. 5. Impacts: After completing each six-month course 100% of women-trainees become literate in Hindi. On an average 90-95% of trainees pass the NIOS vocational exam in stitching-tailoring. More than 75% of the pass-outs become self-employed after the course, and the rest 25% restart their schooling.
