Mental health is considered to be one of today's mega-trends. No wonder- approx. 10% of the population is suffering from mental health problems in a way that prevents them from participating in our post-industrial information-centric societies. As a result, the demand for help is rapidly increasing while the supply stays limited.
As in other healthcare areas, technology might be able to help closing the increasing service gap. Our focus is to utilize the EEG (=Elektroenzephalogram=brain waves) for diagnosis and treatment.
The usability of the spontaneous EEG for the diagnosis of mental health disorders has been mostly overstated. However, more advanced technologies such as following the information processing of the brain by analyzing the response of electrical potentials to stimuli proved to be a very reliable basis for biomarkers for mental health disorders. Our partly-owned daughter HBImed AG develops technologies to discover and validate such biomarkers utilizing its database (largest to-date) and tools.
Treatment of mental health disorders can be supported by a technique called Neurofeedback which has been discovered in the 1960s. In frame of the cooperation with the Othmer group in California, which leads the field since the 1980s, we contribute the development of hard- and software. The Othmer method has been developed empirically based on qualitative evidence criteria. Our devices and software are approved medical systems (CE and FDA). Both the method and instrument are rapidly adopted by the medical field due to its practicality and efficacy. In frame of cooperations with universities and medical care providers we also research related technologies.
