In today's society, the topic of mental illness remains a taboo that many prefer to ignore. However, the reality is that 25% of the population will suffer from some type of mental disorder throughout their lives, and the stigma attached to the disease adds pain and worsens the condition. More loneliness, more guilt, and more shame. Both for them and for their families.
For this reason, the Europamundo Foundation and the Rotary Club Madrid Corporate, together with LEALTIC Transformação Digital, have joined forces to promote the creation of BELO, Brillando En La Oscuridad (Shining in the Dark), a project dedicated to breaking the stigma and promoting inclusion.
BELO is a global movement of a chain of lights that add up to illuminate paths on both sides of the darkness:
The side of the one suffering from the disorder:
The darkness of oblivion, of incomprehension, of exclusion, of loneliness, of incapacitation, of abandonment, of fear.
The side of the environment, of society:
The darkness of ignorance, of the feeling of helplessness, of not recognizing a reality from which everyone wants to distance themselves.
The first action of the BELO project is the CONCURSO LUCES EN LA OSCURIDAD (Lights In The Dark Contest), which, with the support of the AMAFE association, Andersen Tax & Legal (Spain), Universitas XXI International Foundation, Aita Menni Hermanas Hospitalarias (Hospital Sisters), and other companies and institutions adding up, seeking to promote creativity and artistic expression as tools to combat stigma.
