What started as small acts of kindness in helping with adhoc work at a govt school near our home in the Nilgiris, is now formalised into a public charitable trust called BeMyBuddy Foundation. BMBF is growing rapidly, expanding our reach to 5 middle schools of the region where we provide various types of interventions to improve the children's learning outcomes.
We conduct regular spoken English classes, sports coaching, and practical science workshops. We have also sponsored a musical marching band, with the band master in one school, which is the talk of the hills. Our organic vegetable farm at one of the schools, has other schools asking for more. We have also setup 2 computer labs at a foster home where we teach computers to around 250 kids. Some of the senior students have shown good progress and are already ready for coding.
Firmly believing that a conducive learning environment is an important first step in improving learning outcomes, we renovated with the help of our supporters, one of the government schools that badly needed a facelift, including a new roof, new electrical and plumbing lines, kitchen and teachers' room renovation, a new sheltered dining space. Executed in 45 days during the Summer break.
We are basically a self-funded organisation at the moment and the founder trustees are fully involved in its day to day activities, including teaching when so required. While BMBF encourages local talent for carrying out the activities of the Trust, we ensure that the teachers are properly trained in the methodology being adopted like for our spoken English classes and our sports program.
Online teaching is an option that should not be ruled out to bridge the gap between resources availability in the rural areas. We have thus started online tuition classes for Maths and Science for our outgoing Class 8 to help them follow their career path.
