The Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience Berlin (BCCN Berlin) was founded in 2004 and addresses one of the most challenging questions in computational and cognitive neuroscience: “How is it possible that we can react to sensory stimuli with millisecond precision if intermediate processing elements – on the level of single synapses, single neurons, small networks and even large neural systems – vary significantly in their response to the same repeated stimulus?” To answer this question, we aim to bridge the gap between theory and experiment in the brain sciences by: - fostering a close interaction between theoreticians and experimenters - making experimental and clinical neuroscience more quantitative - bringing theory closer to experiments. and to provide the knowledge of our fundamental research to: - support the development of new technical systems in the health sector - support the development of high-tech devices for the modern society. We use a broad spectrum of experimental and mathematical methods (data analysis, pattern recognition, modelling, etc) to build and test models of the brain. We are convinced that, applying mathematics and theoretical methods is crucial for understanding brain functions and dysfunctions. With our Graduate Programs Computational Neuroscience, we aim at fostering a new generation of scientists who have been trained in both mathematical / computational skills and neuroscientific methodologies. We offer a Master Program Computational Neuroscience and a PhD/Doctoral Program Computational Neuroscience. Both are international (>50% students from abroad) and interdisciplinary.
