About Beyond Benign—Green Chemistry for a Sustainable Future

Beyond Benign's mission is to equip educators, scientists, and citizens with the tools to teach and practice green chemistry to achieve a sustainable society. We envision a world where scientists and citizens enter the workforce with the skills to design and choose greener, sustainable technologies that spur the innovation economy. Beyond Benign was co-founded by John Warner, Ph.D. and Amy Cannon, Ph.D. in 2007 as a 501c3 nonprofit to develop and disseminate green chemistry best practices, case studies, curriculum, lab experiments, and outreach activities globally, to science educators, industry, and society at large. Beyond Benign Programs 1-Day, 2-Day, Lead Teacher and Online Teacher Trainings provide K-12 educators with the skills and tools to implement and practice green chemistry in their classrooms. Educators are presented with sustainable science and green chemistry concepts through real-world, innovative, green technology applications that foster an understanding of the economic, environmental and social implications of chemical processes. Green Chemistry Curriculum Program develops specialized curriculum (includes over 175 lessons plans and curricula) focused on sustainable science, green chemistry and related subjects. All content is open-access via our website and may be downloaded for free. The materials were designed by curriculum experts, typically teachers, and are linked to state and national standards. Community Engagement Program— includes educational activities that may be implemented in a variety of settings such as schools, museums, science fairs and more. Our Green Chemistry Commitment Program supports a consortium of higher education institutions and faculty who share a commitment to green chemistry education. Beyond Benign develops and disseminates toxicology and green chemistry modules, presentations, webinars, case studies, and a new resource guide demonstrating green chemistry practices.
