About Black Health Matters Lab - La santé des noirs compte
Since 2020, under the leadership of Dr. Roberta Timothy, the Black Health Matters Lab has emerged as a prominent force in promoting emancipatory research initiatives and programs. Grounded in principles of resistance and empowerment, the lab focuses on addressing the social determinants of Black health, notably anti-Black racism. Dr. Timothy's work enriches critical race theory by exploring the intricate impacts of factors such as Indigeneity, gender, class, sexual orientation, gender identity, (dis)ability, religion/spirituality, transgenerational connections, and historical/herstorical and contemporary intersectional violence on the health and well-being of African/Black communities. This examination is coupled with a commitment to centering community resistance through innovative decolonizing health practices, including those rooted in artistic expression. A pivotal aspect of the Black Health Matters Lab is its active engagement of graduate research students from the Master of Public Health in Black Health program as collaborators in creating research outputs. The lab's endeavours have resulted in various projects, including the "Black Health Matters: National and Transnational COVID-19 Impact, Resistance, and Intervention Strategies Project," resources such as "How to talk to children about racism and anti-Black racism" available on YouTube, the Black Health Lecture Series, the Black Health Pedagogy and Research Library Guide housed at the U of T Library, and the upcoming Winter 2025 Black Health Symposium among other actions. Website coming in Spring 2025
