Bio Clean Carbon is an innovative company transforming wastewater treatment into a carbon-capturing, nutrient-recycling process. Leveraging the natural capabilities of cyanobacteria, Bio Clean Carbon uses open pond systems within wastewater facilities to capture CO₂ from the air and absorb C, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from the water through photosynthesis. This process not only reduces atmospheric carbon but also captures nutrients that would otherwise contribute to eutrophication. Cyanobacteria can grow in open ponds using photosynthesis even in the harsh Nordic winter-climate. This makes the technology highly energy-efficient and adaptable to existing pond infrastructure for wastewater facilities, keeping both operating and capital costs low. The cyanobacteria biomass generated is harvested and converted into biochar via a low-energy pyrolysis process, which locks carbon long-term while producing pyrolysis gas and biochar with diverse applications. The solution can also generate revenue by leveraging wastewater companies' savings from CO₂, nitrogen, and phosphorus capture.
Bio Clean Carbon process stands out due to its scalability, ease of adoption, and low energy demands, utilizing existing wastewater ponds and infrastructures, making it both cost-effective and adaptable. Our project aligns with global sustainability goals (SDGs 6, 12, 13, and 15) and responds to the urgent needs of climate change mitigation and pollution reduction, creating a positive environmental and societal impact.
We completed successful lab-tests showing 50% capture of phosphate, 80% capture of Nitrogen and CO2 capture for the air. We start pilot testing and certifications in Q4 2025 with our LOI-partners, paving the way toward large-scale implementation across wastewater facilities.
