Every day, billions of tons of petroleum-based plastics flood our markets, becoming indispensable in our lives. However, their improper disposal and inefficient recycling processes transform them into an insidious threat to our planet. As these plastics accumulate in landfills and oceans, they break down into harmful microplastics, infiltrating ecosystems, and endangering marine life. Despite efforts to introduce biodegradable plastics, current options like polylactic acid (PLA) and poly-hydroxy-alkanoates (PHAs) have limitations that hinder their effectiveness in curbing this crisis. The copolymerization of two (or more) different monomers can merge some features of the corresponding homopolymers. Therefore, [P(LA-co-3HB)] copolymers represent a game changer in the fight against plastic pollution, in fact they have been designed to achieve more desirable mechanical and biodegradation features. While traditional methods have fallen short in synthesizing alternating P(LA-co-3HB) copolymers, we're pioneering a new frontier with our cutting-edge approach. By harnessing state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, we're designing hybrid polymerases capable of synthesizing these copolymers with unprecedented accuracy and efficiency. The outcomes of the BioCat4BioPol project represent a paradigm shift in bioplastic production. We're proving that rationalized enzymatic synthesis can yield bioplastics with predictable and desirable compositions—bringing us one step closer to a cleaner, greener future.
