About BioFusion Tech
BioFusion aims to address intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration, a leading cause of back pain. The project focuses on developing a porous 3D printed bioresorbable ceramic-based cage for spinal fusion, as an alternative to the current surgical fusion using metal/polymer cages. This innovative cage is osteoinductive, counteracts local inflammation, and can be customized for optimal strength, resorption rate, and release properties. Through in vitro and animal model testing, the study aims to demonstrate the viability of this approach for treating IVD degeneration. This promising solution has the potential to improve the quality of life for millions suffering from back pain. The BioFusion Consortium is part of the Advanced Healthcare Materials call, formed by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) and the Dutch Research Council (NWO).
