What does biodegradable mean?

What’s the difference between biodegradable plastics vs oxo-degradables?
-While often confused with biodegradable plastics, oxo-degradables quickly fragment into smaller and smaller pieces, called microplastics. These microplastics don’t break down at the molecular level or polymer level like biodegradable and compostable plastics. Which can wind up in the water or food supply. While testing has shown that OXO plastics can be composted, your stretch film waste won’t end up in a compost bin!
Why Does This Matter?
-Degradable plastics simply break down into microparticles of plastic. This is why OXO-degradable plastic has been banned in the European Union.
The European Union directive on the reduction of the impact of certain plastic products on the environment became law in April 2019 and includes a ban on oxo-degradable plastics. (EU directive 2019/904 Article 5)
ASTM D5511 testing has shown up to 99.7% biodegradation in 1,697 days under anaerobic conditions. ASTM D5526 testing demonstrates up to 36.6% biodegradation in 391 days in landfill conditions.
