BJE Environmental Optics (est. 2017) (BJE) is developing two scientific instruments that measure particles (aerosols) in the atmosphere, as well as consulting on atmospheric lidar (laser radar) technology. Aerosols in the atmosphere are complicated varying widely in size, composition, shape, and distribution. The two instruments under development measure light scattered from aerosols and infer their properties. Both instruments have been operated for research for several years, and one, the Imaging Polar Nephelometer (IPN), is patented. The NOAA/SBIR effort will develop the instruments so that they can be easily commercialized by an established instrument company. BJE expertise includes CCD cameras, wide-angle lenses, lasers, image processing, lidar electronics, optical detectors, and atmospheric analysis.
