Black at UTM’s mission is to drive transformative change that fosters Black Flourishing and Inclusive Excellence across UTM’s Black community by dismantling anti-Black racism and injustice. Black at UTM envisions a campus where all Black staff, students, faculty, instructors, custodians, and librarians can learn, work, teach, and thrive through racial equity and empowering spaces of belonging. We base our understanding and confrontation of anti-Black racism on the Black Flourishing Framework, a holistic approach centred on Black well-being, belonging, connection, and community, which fosters an environment where UTM’s Black communities not only survive but thrive, grow, and realize their full potential. Our work is centered on the Black Flourishing Framework and the following seven pillars: - Elevate Black Expertise - Increase Black Visibility and Impact - Enable Data-Informed Decisions - Fund Initiatives Against Anti-Black Racism - Support Community Engagement and Dialogue - Build a Culture of Belonging - Promote Accountability and Collective Responsibility
