Historically significant, Bledisloe House is a key component of The Symphony Centre, New Zealand’s first transport-oriented development underway on the corner of Mayoral Drive and Wellesley Street in mid-town Auckland.
Currently undergoing restoration and upcycling to elevate it to modern functionality and efficiency standards, whilst respecting its iconic heritage, Bledisloe House will be an anchor building in the vibrant Aotea Arts Quarter.
It lies adjacent to Te Waihorotiu Station, set to become New Zealand’s busiest train station when it opens in late 2025. Bledisloe House and The Symphony Centre will be connected at street level by a bustling laneway featuring innovative food and beverage and retail outlets.
Heritage-listed Bledisloe House opened in 1959 and represents an ideological change in government buildings following WWII. It was designed by Gordon Wilson with Jack Beere and named after Lord Bledisloe (Governor-General of New Zealand from 1930 to 1935). The restored facade will be sympathetic to its existing design, whilst invigorating both the upper floors and street level facades.
Bledisloe House, also named Te Wharau O Horotiu – the shelter of Horotiu, is deeply connected to the cultural narrative and anchored in the history of Te Waihorotiu stream that still flows beneath the city. The laneway adjacent to Bledisloe House which was once a lagoon, has been gifted the name Te Kōrepo (lagoon), and The Symphony Centre gifted the name Waitaheke (waterfall) by Mana Whenua. The names acknowledge the connection between Ranginui (sky) and Papatuanuku (land), and celebrate the many branches and watercourses of Te Waihorotiu where life and vitality flourish, as well as the people both past and present that move through the spaces above.
Planned ongoing investment by Auckland Council’s urban regeneration unit, Eke Panuku will see the area become a hive of creative and community activity with world-class transport connectivity.
