Blue Dolphin, a UK based company, is at the forefront of lightweight packaging for all cylindrical cell types. With support from Innovate UK, we have been collaborating with Warwick University and their battery experts on developing the LACS (Lightweight Aeronautical Cylindrical Cells) technology.
Through a design, build and test programme, Blue Dolphin has demonstrated the effectiveness of LACS to deliver significant mass savings to all cylindrical cell types.
Blue Dolphin has developed a unique packaging solution, proven to deliver up to a 15% total cell mass saving. The product is underwritten with IP to make possible the use of an aluminium shell for cylindrical cells. This offers significant improvements in both specific energy and specific power density for all current and future cells, regardless of chemistry type and with no negative impact on their performance.
The LACS project is now at the pre-production stage of development. After 18 months of R&D work at Warwick University, the project has engaged with commercial partners to speed up development.
