The Blue Institute aims to protect coastal and marine natural assets by converting them to financial capital and empowering communities to manage their long-term sustainability as effectively as possible.
The Blue Institute is founded on six core principles:
1. Transparent and verifiable science enables us to prove the long-term financial value of natural marine assets.
2. Nature can be converted to a new asset class around the market value of ecosystem services, releasing capital to both protect and preserve critical natural marine resources.
3. Innovations in emerging technology can be utilised to reduce the time and cost of natural capital data gathering, analysis and monitoring.
4. Meaningful community engagement is essential to the long-term sustainable stewardship of marine and coastal natural resources.
5. The development of blue natural capital works best when approached within a holistic Blue Economy approach, underpinned by targeted, sensitive capacity building of all relevant stakeholders.
6. Wherever possible, we look to work in partnership with existing agencies for mutual benefit and to amplify the potential for rapid action.
