BlueSky is made up of a group of techno-entrepreneurs with extensive know-how and experience in commercialising research results. We cover the complete development process bringing new research findings to market, from bench scale piloting, to market and product development. We go as far as founding new start-ups, securing funding, and managing the venture to exit. Alternatively we assist with licensing the technology out to licensees identified during the market development process.
We have found that many South African researchers produce outstanding research results, but these results seldom translate to products. Commercialising research is challenging and without a strong pull from industry require researchers to become entrepreneurs themselves (e.g. Prof Vivian Alberts, Solar Technologies). This is not ideal since good scientists are better at science than entrepreneurship.

Route to market research studies:
We provide route to market research studies to define the roadmap for bringing a new research result to market. We do quick route to market studies at R 25k and detailed studies up to R 95k. We have completed many such studies for researchers, TTO’s and companies.
Licensing:
BlueSky’s Principals have entered into and negotiated more than 30 licenses on behalf of Universities and start-up’s with some of the leading international medical devices, medical equipment, and some of the largest dental companies in the world.
Raising capital:
The Principals of BlueSky have raised more than R100M in funding for new ventures and advised on filing more than R 20M in patents and IP protection. We can assist with writing applications or advise on the process. We currently have lots of experience with TIA applications but have raised funding from the IDC, SPII, SEDA, local government, private investors and debt before.

BlueSky is building two new start-ups commercialising technology from local universities.
