Blue Cross was founded in Estonia in 2020 by a group of Chief Officers and Medical Specialists who decided that it was time to start looking deeper into the issue of monitoring the health of our crew onboard.
The technology and the availability are there. The regulation framework might not yet require telemedicine equipment for most flags. Still, it's up to the owner to see its value, especially in times where a shore leave to a doctor is, in most cases, impossible unless in a life-threatening situation.
The question is, who assesses that, and based on what evidence. How can the Chief Mate or Captain understand its urgency and recommend immediate repatriation if it is an internal issue?
What about that Chief Engineer who complained about heart pain and eventually died of a cardiac arrest. Could he still be alive if required to perform a 24hr HOLTER test and then repatriated if the results were troubling?
We hope we never have to answer all of those questions by providing the officers with the equipment they can use, allowing them to focus on what they have been trained, which is first aid.
