In a day of lightening-fast internet access and cars that drive themselves, it is hard to believe that more than one billion people around the globe still don't have access to reliably safe drinking water -- one of the most basic necessities of life. Even with nearly a thousand safe water initiatives worldwide, The World Health Organization reports nearly all water-borne disease is preventable....so why aren't we preventing it? The Bright Water Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation with an ambitious goal: to eliminate water-borne disease worldwide. You read that right. Our goal is ZERO. We aren't here to duplicate what other safe water projects are doing. Instead, our microbiologists have discovered an innovative, extremely affordable and effective way to verify the safety of drinking water on the spot. Far too often freshly drilled wells and other water sources get contaminated, and people keep right on drinking from them because they have no easy way to test its safety. We partner with local projects and initiatives already on the ground to educate people about this simple testing method that is saving lives, and to teach people how to make their water safe once again using solar pasteurization or chlorine. BWF’s initial focus is on eliminating water-borne disease in Lower Nyakach, a province of Kenya. The foundation has partnered with Friends of the Old (FOTO), a community-based organization that works to improve the lives of grandparents raising their orphaned grandchildren after an entire generation of parents was lost to the AIDS epidemic. FOTO volunteers are teaching community leaders why and how to test and verify the safety of drinking water in more than 120 villages, enhancing the lives of more than 15,000 families. BWF is now in the process of expanding its efforts into other countries, such as Nicaragua. We're always looking for new partners to spread the word and create a brighter future.
