Bangladesh Road Transport Authority

Formation: The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) was established on December 20, 1987, through SRO No. 303/Law/87/MVRT/1E-7/84 (Part) in accordance with Section 2A of the Motor Vehicles Ordinance, 1983 (amended in 1987). It officially commenced operations in January 1988. Objective: The BRTA was formed to ensure proper road transport management, discipline in the road transport sector, and road safety. It was established under the then Ministry of Communications (currently the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges) to implement the Motor Vehicles Ordinance, 1983. The BRTA now operates under the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority Act, 2017, to enforce the Road Transport Act, 2018. Constitution: The Chairman holds supreme authority in BRTA and is responsible for executing tasks as directed by the government from time to time. According to the revised organogram, BRTA currently has 8 divisional offices and 64 circle offices. Among these, there are 64 district circles and 6 metro circles. The divisional office is headed by a Director (Engineer), the metro circles are led by Deputy Directors (Engineer), and the district circle offices are headed by Assistant Directors (Engineer).
