-4 Generations and Growing- In 1938, Bruce Bauer opened his shop's doors for the first time in Medford, Oregon. After building several homes in San Mateo County in 1946, he saw the need for a lumber yard, inspiring him to open his second store in San Carlos, California. Originally opened as a contractor yard, over the years we have evolved into a do-it-yourself home center with strong emphasis on practical advice and quality customer service for home owners. Don Thom bought the lumber yard from his father-in-law, Bruce Bauer in 1966. In 1971, he purchased Bickell Brothers Lumber at San Antonio Circle in Mountain View, turning it into a Bruce Bauer Lumber & Supply. Two of Don's sons, Darryl and Dave took interest in the shop at a young age. They had to learn from the bottom up and became familiar with all phases of building materials and home construction. Eventually Darryl and Dave expanded the inventory to include basic plumbing and electrical supplies, adding large selection of homeowner merchandise. Darryl's two sons have remained active in the family business. Brian, who worked for the company throughout his youth, has returned to the Bruce Bauer Window and Door department after getting his BA in communications at Sacramento State. Darryl's youngest son, Joel, handles web operations and marketing for the company.
