As the capital of the European Union, the Brussels-Capital Region is home to a wide array of international institutions and organizations. As an internationally oriented region, it has pursued a dynamic foreign policy since 1989.
The administration Brussels International was created to develop a coherent European and foreign policy for the Brussels-Capital Region. Within the Brussels Regional Public Service, it coordinates the region's European relations and commitments as well as its international representation.
Its main tasks are to manage the Region's bilateral and multilateral relations, as well as European affairs. Brussels International is composed of four directorates:
- The External Relations Directorate;
- The ERDF Directorate (European Regional Development Fund);
- The Europe Directorate;
- The Public Relations, Protocol and Communications Directorate
The Delegation of the Brussels-Capital Region to the European Union represents the Region before the EU institutions. Brussels International also deals with the movement of arms and dual-use goods to and from the Region.
