When you’re a contractor and something is broken, you fix it. Back in 1996 that is exactly what a group of Minnesota-based contractors did. Tired of paying into the standard insurance market with little, to no control over how their premiums were used, they decided to pool their premiums to create the Builders & Contractors Workers’ Compensation Fund (B&C.) B&C is a self-insured group workers’ compensation fund for Minnesota-based contractors. Group self-insurance allows businesses within the same industry to come together to insure their workers’ compensation as a group. B&C is comprised of members that are primarily in the construction industry and the program is managed by a Board of Directors elected from participating members of the program. Mackinaw Administrators, LLC, an experienced third-party, handles the services for the fund on behalf of the members. The fund provides affordable workers' compensation insurance with a strong emphasis on safety. When managed properly, the self-insured model results in long-term stability, consistent return of surplus premiums, more efficient claims management, and enhanced focus on safety cultures and services.
