Bush to Beach

Bush to Beach is a unique initiative that empowers children from remote communities with enriching experiences on Sydney's Northern Beaches and the Gold Coast’s Mermaid Beach. Created as a reward for good school attendance and positive behavior, the program inspires confidence, builds self-esteem, and encourages educational engagement. Participants have the chance to explore new environments, learn valuable life skills, and connect with people from diverse backgrounds. Since 2006, Bush to Beach has welcomed over 600 children from communities like Brewarrina, Bourke, and Goodooga. The program has now expanded to Mermaid Beach on the Gold Coast, bringing kids from Boggabilla and Toomelah. The kids are introduced to coastal life with activities like snorkelling and surf lessons, while gaining essential skills in water safety, CPR, and basic first aid. Bush to Beach, along with surf clubs, sponsors, and volunteers, provides food, accommodation, and support to ensure the program remains free for all participants and their families. Bush to Beach is “reconciliation in action,” fostering friendships across communities, inspiring hope, and empowering young people to dream bigger, grow stronger, and embrace new opportunities.
