The Ministry of the Environment is responsible for administrative and research tasks in the areas of environmental protection and planning. In Denmark the administration at state level is managed by the Ministry of the Environment. At the regional and local levels, much of the administrative responsibility has been delegated to municipalities. The Ministry consists of three agencies, one corporate management centre, one independent research institute and seven independent Environment Centres. Two independent appeal boards are also linked to the Ministry. The Ministry of the Environment was created in autumn 1971 under the name "Ministry of Pollution Mitigation", which was revised to the current name in 1973. The Ministry employs more than 2500 people.
