The school was founded in 1921 as Quarry Bank High School for Boys and merged with neighbouring Calder High School for Girls in 1967. Notable alumni include founding Beatles member John Lennon, Rod Davis of the Quarrymen, music producer Guy Chambers, comedian Les Dennis, musician John Power, writer Kate Ellis, acclaimed author and filmmaker Clive Barker, architect Sir James Stirling, and artistic director of London's Southbank Centre Judith "Jude" Pamela Kelly.
