The CAPE “European Open Compute Architecture for Powerful Edge” project, an ambitious initiative reshapes edge-cloud computing by defining edge micro data centers as a new unit of computing. Fully committed to open source, CAPE develops high-performance edge server hardware platforms with highly composable infrastructures, grounded in forward-looking standards. Together with an open-source software stack, this holistic approach boosts power- and energy-efficiency while delivering the digital sovereignty Europe needs in a challenging future. CAPE was kicked off in December 2024 for a three-year duration. Jointly coordinated by Bielefeld University (general) and Hiro Micro Data Systems (technical), the project unites expertise from SMEs and academic partners to build a complete stack—from hardware and software to solutions and services—pioneering a unified, flexible edge-cloud computing continuum. The CAPE project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101189899 in “Open Source for Cloud/Edge to support European Digital Autonomy (RIA)”, HORIZON-CL4-2024-DIGITAL-EMERGING-01-21 and has been co-funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF, Grant No. 200429), by armasuisse Science and Technology.
