About Center for Antiracism Research for Health Equity
Founded on February 24th 2021, the Center for Antiracism Research for Health Equity (CARHE, pronounced "care") at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health identifies, explores and dismantles structural racism with antiracism research, engagement, and narrative change. The work of antiracism is fueled by love, and love is what shaped the life and career of our Founding Director, Rachel Hardeman PhD, MPH. Born and raised in Minneapolis, she always loved her home but also saw from an early age that not everyone in her community had the same opportunities to be healthy. Dr. Hardeman built her career on identifying, understanding, and ultimately dismantling structural racism so all people have the same opportunities to be healthy. She developed networks of partnerships with community leaders, health care providers, policy makers, and advocacy organizations to collectively address the problems of structural racism. And in 2021, with the support of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota (Blue Cross) and the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, Dr. Hardeman founded CARHE. 1. Develop antiracist research to understand and measure the impact of racism on health. 2. Foster authentic community engagement by convening researchers, practitioners, and community members to address the root causes of racial health inequities and drive real action for change. 3. Develop education and training on structural racism, antiracism, and health inequities for students, public health professionals, and community members. 4. Change the narrative about race and racism to one that does not hold up whiteness as the ideal standard for human beings. 5. Serve as a trusted resource for public health agencies, policymakers, payers, and the media on issues related to racism and health equity. Posts on this LinkedIn page reflect the CARHE team, not the University of Minnesota or any other organizations or individuals who are not directly included in our center.
