CASE Department

CASE (Computer Applications in Science & Engineering) is one of the four scientific departments at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), hosting MareNostrum 5, a 315 PFlops supercomputer. As an industry-oriented department working on projects with international companies around the world, CASE creates the most advanced engineering simulation tools. Our expertise covers various fields such as energy, aeronautics, propulsion, biomechanics, smart cities, natural hazards, electromagnetic devices, quantum computing, and dual technologies. CASE develops both traditional simulation tools, which solve systems of coupled partial differential equations (PDEs), and modern AI techniques, based on data analytics tools. It covers the entire simulation value chain, including the pre- and post- process. For instance, we design high-precision meshers for complex geometries such as an airplane turbine using curved elements. We create surrogate models from synthetic simulation data to speed up the design process for specific problems. We work also in the visualization of complex data. Our work is carried out within the framework of European Union research funding programs, as well as Spanish and Catalan public research initiatives, and through collaborations with leading companies.
