The CCGTS project – ‘Addressing Climate Change Through Green Taxation Initiatives: A Path Towards Environmental Sustainability’ (2023.12454.PEX) aims to empower Portuguese companies towards environmental sustainability.
Environmental taxation has emerged as a crucial instrument in promoting sustainability in areas such as energy, transport and pollution. However, in Portugal, the low level of adherence by companies to environmental tax policies reveals a worrying fiscal illiteracy. This lack of knowledge threatens both sustainable business development and the evolution of the country’s climate transition process and society in general.
The CCGTS project aims to increase companies’ environmental tax literacy. Led by Principal Investigator Ana Arromba Dinis, coordinator of the CICF’s Taxation and Fiscal Policies Research Line, the FCT-funded project combines applied research with intervention in the Portuguese business community. The initiative includes studies on environmental tax legislation, questionnaires to assess business knowledge of environmental tax policies and direct actions with participating companies.
The expected results include the creation of a training action plan for companies and the publication of a book on environmental taxation, among other things, to turn towards long-term sustainable practices. The project thus aims to be a milestone in training the business sector to adopt environmental tax policies, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.
