The Calabar Center for Justice and Peace Initiative (CCJPI), formerly known as Justice Development and Peace/ Caritas (JDPC) is a federated arm of the Church and Society Department of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria. In every diocese it coordinates the activities geared towards a positive change in the human condition.
The problem of poverty, disease, injustice, is a hydra head that requires multi-faceted approaches. Thus JDPC is the response of the Catholic Church to these problems and its objective is mainly development. Charity or relief efforts aim at cushioning the effects of a problem. But efforts geared towards development are focused on the fundamental causes. At JDPC we learn to take the Justice Development look at the entire structure, going right down to its roots, and attempting to deal with the problem from its origins.
Every JDPC has its jurisdiction mainly in its particular diocese; even when the structure is provincial; it is only in terms of coordination, and building of capacity. CCJPI has its jurisdiction mainly in the Southern Senatorial District, comprising of seven local government areas: Calabar Municipality, Calabar South, Odukpani LGA, Akamkpa LGA, Akpabuyo LGA, Biase LGA, and Bakassi LGA. For activities that span beyond a particular jurisdiction, CCJPI carries them out in collaboration with other JDPCs or other Civil Society Organizations, domiciled in those areas.
CCJPI Calabar uses the structures of Catholic Church to reach out to all who need her intervention, and does not discriminate against anyone whether because of sex, religion or race. CCJPI has worked in the past with non-Catholics and even non-Christians. Our philosophy is based on the Social Teaching of the Church (STC), which basically sees every human being as a child of God, and abhors discrimination of any sort. The cardinal objective is the promotion of human dignity, and to fight against situations that debase that dignity.
