The serious consequences of corrosion (plant shutdowns, reduction in efficiency, expensive over-designs and maintenance, etc.) have become a problem of worldwide significance. It has been stated that 15% or more of the corrosion cost (3 to 4% of the gross national product in developed countries) can be saved by the application of existing technology. Therefore, corrosion related studies and development of more resistant materials are of crucial importance in the technological world.
The research group has over 30 years of experience in the field of corrosion, degradation and protection of advanced materials, such as steels, light alloys and metal matrix composites. The group is interested in alloy engineering and tailoring of surface functional properties. A range of available facilities for that purpose include corrosion tests, tribological equipment and access to alloy manufacturing facilities. Specific areas of research include development of new magnesium alloys (role of alloying elements and semisolid processing) for transport and biomedical applications and advanced surface treatments by anodizing and plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) of Al-, Mg- and Ti-based substrates for a wide range of applications.
