2024 kicked off with elevated interest rates and some sticky inflation surprises from the US. The realm of private equity (PE) has encountered its share of trials in recent years, and it looks like 2024 will be no different. Dry powder reserves—the amount of capital committed but not yet deployed—continues to increase ~$4 trillion, marking another 8+ consecutive year of growth. Strategies diverge with specialist and large GPs taking influence. However, the rise of fund-of-funds offer GPs of any size the opportunity to “scale up” with co-investments. Secondaries as wells as private credit become interesting value offerings in an industry which looks for innovation. In relation to public equity, in the US, there are ~4k public companies offered on the public exchanges, with total a market cap of around $50 trillion (the magnificent 7 ~$17 trillion). Since the 1990s there has been a drop of about 50% in the number of active public listings. However, in the private markets there are around 15-20k firms.
