The Computational Design and Machine Learning lab is an international research group which explores the use of Machine Learning to solve architectural problems in design, analysis, and fabrication. CD_ML was founded by Dr. Guy Austern with a vision to bridge the gaps between design and coding, creating state-of-the-art tools for the architectural profession.
The main efforts of the lab are currently directed at:
ML for reading and writing architecture: Focusing on graph and language-based models, this research arc asks how should architecture be represented in the age of ML? How can machines tell good architecture from bad? How can ML be integrated into BIM tools?
ML and the city: As urban systems expand in both scale and complexity, the need for analytical methodologies in urban design becomes increasingly urgent. This research arc focuses on developing ML vision-based models for analysing urban information and turning it into actionable data.
Sustainable Materials: Novel materials such as 3D printed wood and self-shaping composites have the potential to provide sustainable architectural construction solutions. This research arc deals with all steps of their design and fabrication cycle, from mold design to computational inverse design tools which predict material deformation.
