CENTEC Técnico

The Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering (CENTEC) is a research centre of Instituto Superior Técnico of the University of Lisbon that is recognized and funded by FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia) of the Portuguese Ministry for Education and Science. The Unit of Marine Technology and Engineering (UETN) was created in 1994, at a time when the research and development system in Portugal was restructured. This led to the dissolution of Instituto Nacional de Investigação Científica (INIC) from where the 3 founding PhD research members of UETN made the transition. The activities of CENTEC are focused on scientific research and development (R&D) and on their application for sustainable exploration and exploitation in the various fields of interest such as maritime transport and ports, ocean space utilization including coastal areas, use of marine resources, recreational activities and the protection of the marine environment. It is possible to develop these activities through the use of marine and offshore structures, the design, construction and maintenance of which are at the heart of CENTEC’s activities. Emphasis is placed on CENTEC’s research activities in the areas of risk analysis, safety and reliability and their application to the maritime sector as well as other industrial and service sectors. Amongst its objectives, CENTEC is interested in promoting and encouraging advanced education and training through its research and development activities and in disseminating scientific results through participation in, and organization of, scientific and technical workshops and conferences.
