The Chalmers Centre for Metal Cutting Research (MCR) was established in 2003 through the initial partnership with SKF and the Volvo Group.
Since its inception, the MCR has been dedicated to strengthening industry-academia partnerships. The MCR facilitates industry-driven operations via RESEARCH and LEARNING and by managing two COMPETENCE NETWORKS related to (i) process fluids (PVC) and (ii) grinding and abrasive technology (IGC).
The research is carried out in the following main areas:
• Emerging Manufacturing Technologies
• Surface Integrity and Materials
• Modelling and Simulation of Machining Operations
Chalmers MCR also offers professional education on machining and grinding technology. Engineers, process planners and machine operators take part in this training to gain basic and advanced knowledge in various subject areas. Our short professional courses grant university credits and combine the latest research findings with insights and case studies from industry.
The Centre for Process Fluids (PVC) was established in 2007 to share best practices on sustainable manufacturing with respect to process and metalworking fluids. The PVC brings together 30 members – from end users, fluid suppliers, system suppliers and competence providers. Over the last 10 years, the PVC made substantial effort towards cleaner production, raising awareness on the various aspects of operational health and safety, compliance with the EU’s REACH Regulation, and promoting advanced cooling and lubrication methods in machining.
The International Grinding Centre (IGC) was founded in 2016 with the goal of developing an internationally recognized competence network in grinding and abrasives technology. The IGC facilitates industry-wide collaboration, exchanges best practices and advances research. It comprises 25 members which cover the entire technology value-chain – end users, wheel and abrasive manufacturers, machine-tool builders and competence providers.
