CHIMFUNSHI Germany

The non-profit association “Chimfunshi e.V.” (Germany) supports the Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage Zambia as part of its commitment to the protection of chimpanzees endangered by extinction. The Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage is one of the world’s largest and oldest sanctuaries for chimpanzees in need. It is home to more than 140 chimpanzees on 4,200 ha of wooded land. The animals come to Chimfunshi from all over the world after being rescued from poachers, from amusement parks or from private keepers. Here, the animals find a species-appropriate habitat with the greatest possible freedom. In addition to taking in chimpanzees, the protection of Chimfunshi's natural environment is a significant part of CWOT's work. The Chimfunshi site is internationally recognised and designated as an "Important Bird Area" (IBA), as it is home to a variety of rare bird species. The holistic concept also includes the social and welfare development of the local community, to provide educational and employment opportunities for the inhabitants of Chimfunshi and beyond, and including basic medical care.
