Chiral chemicals are essential for human living from amino acids as nutraceuticals to drugs to pesticides to flavors and fragrances and myriad other chemical products. Approximately 300 billion tons of chiral chemicals are produced each year consuming trillion tons+ of solvents. This solvent consumption creates an enormous burden on our environment and accelerates global warming. Our chiral technology start-up, CHIRAVIVE, has in part developed a SUSTAINABLE, State-of-the-Art solution to produce chiral materials with ultra-low solvent consumption and ultra-high energy efficiency. This novel technology platform will become the paradigm for chiral production in the future, saving billion ton+ of solvent consumption annually.
Our chiral technology centers on the use of Preferential Crystallization (validated process on commercial scale) in Continuous Flow (novel and enabling) mode, leading to Continuous Preferential Crystallization (CPC). This technology platform is based on the ground-breaking work of our scientific founder, Prof. Jason Hein at University of British Columbia, in collaboration with Nobel Laureate K. Barry Sharpless and Prof. Donna Blackmond (former Director at Merck & Company) at Scripps Research Institute. To date, we have built three discovery / optimization “chiral device” units and demonstrated highly efficient chiral production of API intermediates such as Aleve, Nexium, and Plavix, illustrating diverse product scope. A particular class of valuable chemicals highly amenable to CPC are amino acids and several unnatural amino acids have been produced with unmatched efficiency. The D-amino acid market is projected to reach $3.7 billion USD in 2017. Supporting this “green” technology is a stellar SAB (Scientific Advisory Board) comprising Nobel Laureate K. Barry Sharpless of Scripps and Dr. Charles Johannes, Head of Chemistry of A*STAR.
