About Chocorua Public Library

Welcome to the Chocorua Public Library – A Place Where Community and Literary History Meet The Chocorua Public Library is one of the few privately funded libraries in New Hampshire open to the public. Managed by a dedicated board of trustees, passionate staff, and a supportive community, it has been a local treasure since its founding in 1888. Originally established by Boston educators and businessmen to promote literacy among Chocorua’s summer visitors and year-round residents, the library began as a subscription-based service with a fee of just $1 per year. In 1891, access expanded to all Tamworth residents. Today, the library is free and open to all, offering books, technology, and community programs. Our story is filled with unique historical ties. William James, known as the father of American psychology and a longtime summer resident of Chocorua, was an early supporter and visitor. Another fascinating chapter in our history features Hadley Hemingway, the first wife of renowned author Ernest Hemingway. After her marriage to Hemingway, Hadley went on to marry journalist Paul Mowrer, a Pulitzer Prize-winning correspondent who had deep roots in Chocorua. During their time here, Hadley served as the librarian at Chocorua Public Library, bringing her own love of books and a connection to the literary world. The library’s physical home has also evolved. From its beginnings in the Chocorua Post Office to cramped quarters in the old Runnells Hall, the library finally found its permanent home in 1969 thanks to a generous bequest from Elizabeth Whittemore. Today’s library is warm and inviting—a true community living room filled with light, conversation, and of course, books. Chocorua Public Library proudly blends small-town friendliness with big-library services. As part of local cooperatives and the New Hampshire State Library system, we continue to grow our resources and programs while honoring our rich history.
