A first contact between interested engineers in Greece, active in the domain of electricity and the international body of CIGRE was established in 1960 and a Liaison Office was created carrying National CIGRE activities until 1976. Following this period, when adequate number of individual and collective members was established, the Greek National Committee for CIGRE was formally created, which for several years until 1989, was fostered by the Public Power Corporation, the vertically integrated power utility of the country. In the year 1989 the Committee obtained the legal form of a nonprofit scientific organization operating in this scheme until today. The Committee has strong and uninterrupted participation in the International CIGRE activities (i.e. Study Committees, Working Groups and Conferences). In the last four decades, the Committee has established a prominent role in the domain of Electricity in the country, by organizing more than 40 scientific events: The biennial National Conference taking place in the odd years (so that it does not coincide with the International Session in Paris) is the most prestigious event in the domain of electricity in the country, attracting speakers and audience from the Utilities, industry and universities. It is typically attended by about 300 participants. The Colloquium, in the even years, related to the conclusions of Paris Sessions, also attracts a very large audience, with local and international invited speakers.
