Civitas Braga, Nonprofit Organisation for the Advocacy and Development of Civic Rights, was established in June 2003. Its origin is a result of the proliferation dynamics of A Civitas, created in Lisbon, in April 1989. It is an associate member of the Portuguese League of Human Rights-Civitas, which is part of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH). FIDH has an advisory responsibility towards the United Nations, Unesco, and the Council of Europe. The organisation aims at the advocacy, further development, and spread of Human Rights, seen as key elements for human dignity, and at the possibility of assuring that, through freedom, each citizen can assume responsibility for their own destiny and for that of the community they are part of. To pursue its aims, Civitas Braga assumes the following goals: - Pedagogic action, aspiring to head the community towards assuming the meaning and significance of their fundamental rights; - Public denunciation and struggle against any affront, omission, marginalisation, or obstruction of these Rights; - Facilitation of solidarity and social integration activities; - Facilitation of communal activities with populations, schools, city councils, and other local institutions; - Advocacy for the special rights of immigrants and ethnic minorities.
