About Clean Catch
Clean Catch is a programme that champions collaborative working to help monitor and minimise the bycatch of sensitive marine species in UK fisheries, and to exchange knowledge globally. We bring together fishermen, the wider seafood industry, scientists, environmental NGOs, policymakers, regulators, technologists, and other key actors to achieve this. We will help the UK Government meet its ambitions to minimise and – where possible – eliminate bycatch of sensitive marine species, as set out in the ecosystem objective of the Fisheries Act and elaborated in the UK Marine Wildlife Bycatch Mitigation Initiative (BMI). Our key objectives towards this are to: Work with fisheries in England to test ways to gather data on sensitive marine species and to mitigate bycatch, based on their effectiveness and practicality. Explore and work to overcome barriers to broader engagement of the fishing industry. Ensure equitable inclusion and representation of the people and groups who have a key role to play in bycatch monitoring and mitigation. Share our results widely, and foster national and international knowledge exchange with similar initiatives across the UK and beyond. We are funded and overseen by Defra, and led by a consortium team comprising Arribada International, Cefas, ZSL, MMO Consulting, and Mindfully Wired.
