CLINSH - Clean Inland Shipping

Due to the presence of a large inland waterway network, the major economic centres ofWestern-Europe are easily accessible by barge. With its large, varied fleet and capacity to move large cargo volumes, the inland shipping sector is a cost efficient and sustainable transport partner. The international requirements on energy-saving and clean air become stricter everyday.Therefore it is important that also the inland shipping sector takes measures to reduce its emissions. ABOUT CLINSH CLINSH – CLean INland SHipping - is a project in which emission reducing technologiesand alternative fuels are tested in practice. This will provide valuable information about their effectiveness and operating costs. The main objective of CLINSH is to contribute to a better air quality in urban areas. * The performance of various emission reduction techniques andalternative fuels will be tested on 30 ships. * Before and after the adjustments the ships emissions will be monitored in real life conditions. * Measurement results are collected in a database that provides a tool for local, regional, national and European governments for(new) policies on the greening of the fleet. ONSHORE POWER SUPPLY At present, the energy needed for heating, lighting and other activities on docked ships is mostly provided by ship generators. Switching to onshore power supply will help reduce the ships’ CO2 and particulate matter emissions and improve air quality in and around ports. STRONG PARTNERSHIP The CLINSH project is a cooperation between 18 partners from 4 European countries, including universities, port authorities, local governments and private companies. The CLINSH project benefits from co-funding from the EU LIFE Programme.
