Back in 1935, grandfather Sua, fresh off the boat from Hainan, started his pushcart business on (naturally) Hainan 2nd St. which is the present day Purvis St. And for three generations now, the family business has been waking the city up from its morning slumber with sock-brewed kopi and teh. Kopi, in all its glorious forms, is important to us. While we appreciate the brewing styles from the west, we have a deep rooted love for kopi, from the sock, made with our family legacy in mind. We love teh too, but hey, nothing quite gets you ready for the world in the morning like a deep, dark and hearty kopi siu dai.
The three of us are currently the custodians of this legacy – big brother Jack, and twins Faye and Anna – and we are committed to two ideals: continuing our family’s legacy of traditional kopi-craft, and providing that jolt of morning kopi heartiness to everyone who needs it.
For years, we’ve have always found ourselves at the heart of the city – being originally located at Boon Tat Street, and then moving to the busy Amoy Street Food Centre, where Jack currently holds fort. We have recently opened a chill, café-style hangout spot at Ascent @ Science Park, run by Anna, and will soon be opening at GSH @ Raffles Place, where Faye will be serving kopi to CBD folks who really need that kopi fix every morning.
While we at Coffee Break stay true to Singapore’s kopi heritage, we’re constantly adding modern twists to our ever-evolving menu. So don’t be surprised to see flavours like pumpkin spice and sea salt mint in traditional kopi, and yes, we do toast right too. Expect a dash of taro or black sesame spread on traditional kaya toasts to complete your morning ritual. Yes, you read right, Taro and Sesame Seed spreads – and if you’re really lucky, you might even get some freshly made, limited-quantity earl grey toast… all hand made.
