While Vancouver’s tech workforce is growing rapidly (30.7% increase in tech occupations over the past five years), and the city boasts the third-highest concentration of software engineers in North America, Black and Latinx professionals remain underrepresented in these roles, similar to the broader trends seen in Canada and the United States. Nationally, Black Canadians make up about 3.5% of the population, yet this group is significantly underrepresented in STEM fields and tech jobs. In the U.S., Black employees make up 13% of the workforce but only 4% of tech workers; Hispanic workers comprise 17% of the workforce but hold just 8% of STEM jobs. The situation in Metro Vancouver echoes these gaps, with few Black, Latinx, and Indigenous students entering and graduating from computer science programs, despite the city’s boom. Our mission is to hep this trend lean towards a more positive increase for these under-represented communities.
