Born from a transformative experience in rural Wisconsin, CIW addresses the critical need for accountable sustainable development plans. Our founder, after working on a sustainability plan for agricultural runoff and water pollution, engaged with stakeholders and discovered a gap in current sustainable development methodologies—they lack holistic benefits and accurate progress tracking. This realization fueled the creation of the Community Inclusive Wealth (CIW) model, an integrated sustainability and investment approach empowering communities with step-by-step, least-cost strategies to achieve holistic sustainability goals. In our innovative approach, CIW surpasses traditional climate and resilience planning, by conducting a holistic evaluation of community resilience and climate action. We quantify sustainability impacts across carbon emissions, natural resources, infrastructure, health, productivity, equity, and social connections. Leveraging a state-of-the-art financial tool and dataset, CIW allocates funding to initiatives efficiently meet climate goals up to 21 times faster than traditional climate planning. Our innovative financial tool streamlines sustainability initiatives, focusing on impactful strategies while minimizing costs. This process provides a holistic view, tracking total sustainability and offering actionable steps for communities, towns, and individuals. Ensuring initiatives are effective and economically viable, CIW addresses the fundamental question of making communities sustainable.
