Cool School Comics

Cool School Comics breaks down complicated concepts into easy-to-grasp comic-style science cartoons making the information accessible, approachable, impactful, and FUN. Comics have the power to grab the attention of a wide range of learning styles and abilities. They improve retention and enable struggling readers to participate in the learning process. These comics pull students away from the screens and put reading science back in their hands. Today's learners are growing up in a world of information overload. They are being inundated with screens and are quick to reject anything they deem "boring." This leaves many teachers struggling to grab the attention of their learners. I was there. I spent over fifteen years in a classroom setting where I encountered these challenges every day. My classes were diverse and possessed a broad spectrum of learning levels and styles. Despite my efforts to find the "best lesson plan," I always had students who were disengaged and falling behind. One year, out of desperation, I created a one-page study guide to help my learners prepare for the state test. The guide was filled with cartoon characters illustrating the concepts. To my surprise, my students LOVED them. Even my most reluctant learners were hooked and willingly reading science. As this idea evolved, students began meeting me at the printer to get their hands on the new science cartoon. Comics work. Since then, I have been working to make this accessible to more educators and students with the hopes of helping more learners succeed in science.
