About CopPhil Centre

CopPhil (National Copernicus Capacity Support Action Programme) objective is to strengthen and promote the operational uptake of free and open Copernicus data in the Philippines. The CopPhil initiative is a unique flagship programme of the EU’s Global Gateway strategy that focuses on building sustainable and trusted networks in various sectors including digital connectivity, health and education, with an emphasis on environmental sustainability and strong partnerships. Designed to harness digital resources and space technology for sustainable development and to support research and business innovations in close cooperation with the government partners, the Copernicus programme fits this vision perfectly. The Centre will support and increase the Philippines ability to address climate vulnerability, biodiversity conservation, and improve hazard management and resilience. This will be carried out through knowledge and skills transfer activities on the use of Copernicus data and information. Earth Observation-based pilot services are being co-developed by European and Philippine partners across three thematic areas, supported by the establishment of a Copernicus Mirror Site in the Philippines. The three thematic areas are: • Ground motion monitoring: Improve hazard management capacity to reduce risks and promote sustainable urban development; • Land, forest, and cover mapping: Support local authorities, farmers, and environmental managers in promoting sustainable land use and improving agricultural productivity; • Benthic habitat monitoring: Promote sustainable coastal management, preserve biodiversity and ensure the long-term health and resilience of vital habitats in the region. CopPhil is managed by the European Union Delegation to the Philippines. It is implemented by the European Space Agency (ESA) in partnership with the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) and the Philippine Department of Science and Technology (DOST)
