The Maldives Local Councils Association (MLCA) was established in 2024 as a unified platform for Maldivian local councils to advocate for decentralization, share best practices, and strengthen local governance. Its formation reflects a significant step toward empowering local councils in the Maldives' multi-party democracy.
In addition to advocacy initiatives, MLCA members have previously organized various programs such as capacity-building workshops, council meetings, and specialized training sessions—notably the HA Workshop (HA Mahaashinthaa) which was organized for NGOs, local councils, and Women’s Development Committees of Haa Alif Atoll. The themes of the workshop focused on leadership skills, challenges faced by women development committees, building stronger collaboration between NGOs, and raising awareness on corruption.
